On our first day in Batuu, after riding the Falcon for the first time, we needed some recovery from our surprise at how fun the ride was and how much time we didn’t spend in line. We had decisions to make on what to do. The lack of coffee won out over everything else we could have chosen. As we walked by Oga’s Cantina, we couldn’t help but notice there wasn’t a line outside. Sure, we had reservations for another day, but they probably had coffee. And they did.
I opted to sidestep the Star Wars theming on this visit to the Cantina and went for the sure thing of a Caffe Latte. Adam was more adventurous and went with the Black Spire Brew. If we hadn’t read there was coffee in the Black Spire Brew, we wouldn’t have guessed it from the taste. It was refreshing and pleasant to drink, but not exactly coffee.
Ronto Roasters was where we really needed to have gone for our caffeine fix. But then Oga’s would have remained a mystery for another forty-eight hours. That would have been a shame. I’ll get to Oga’s in more detail tomorrow during the Star Wars edition of Thirsty Thursday.
Before I move entirely away from the Cantina, we did snag something else off their menu. The food at Oga’s is limited. But at the same time, half a danish and muffin is not a terribly filling breakfast. We took the opportunity to try the Rising Moons Overnight Oats.
The serving is intended for one person, not two, but we figured we would snack our way through meals. The twist on the simple dish allowed it to flow with the rest of the theming. The fruit added tangy sweetness while the bubble tea bead things added pops of squishy texture. I thought I would be repulsed by that, but I didn’t mind in the least. Could that be because it wasn’t even seven, and I’d barely had half a cup of coffee? Possibly.
The overnight oats can be found over in Docking Bay 7 as well, which is where I am headed next. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served at the docking bay. From their menu, we tried the Bright Suns Morning, the Mustafarian Lava Roll, the Smoked Kaduu Ribs, and the Oi-Oi Puff. Adam and I shared the entrees each time we went in and left satisfied but not stuffed, which was our aim.
We could have each easily eaten our own plate of the Bright Suns Morning. It was a well-balanced breakfast. The potato hash being a particular highlight. I say that with the knowledge, I munched on mushrooms, which is not something I do. The texture throws me for a loop. But not in this dish. The troublesome fungi was cooked in such a way I didn’t mind. The sausages are seasoned but not in an overwhelming way. The one complaint would be that the egg muffin could have been a little larger but, you can’t have everything.
The Lava roll with its smear of blueberry compote was a lighter, less sticky, but equally flavorful, little sister to the Cinnamon Roll found in Gaston’s Tavern in the Magic Kingdom. The standalone version is significantly larger than the one included in the Bright Suns dish. So, if you’re sharing and both end up liking the roll, I’d recommend ordering the full-sized version along with your protein plate.
I don’t usually go in for ribs, but the meat on the Kaduu Ribs was tender and flavorful, falling right off the bone and having a light kick to it. The blueberry cornbread had me curious. I thought it might end up tasting like a sad blueberry muffin, but the cornbread recipe used held it’s own against the blueberry additives. Not going to lie, if they offered a standalone offering, I’d buy it. As for the cabbage slaw, I’ll be honest, I am not a slaw fan, so I can’t comment on the vibrantly colored cabbage slaw.
And, the dessert. The Oi-Oi Puff was a delight and I wish I hadn’t shared it. Raspberry is a strong flavor for some, but this dish seems to have been crafted with that in mind. As you can see from the picture above, the plate wasn’t oozing with it. Instead, you are given just enough for the raspberry to enhance the passion fruit and guava filling. Nom. Nom. Nom.
