Democracy Brewing

Sometimes, you stumble into the place you wanted to be and you had no idea that's what you wanted.

I had 23% of a plan. Alright, it was higher than that. The idea was to hit up one of my favorite spots in Boston after we got out of the Downton Abbey exhibit, The Lower Depths.

They closed. In June.

How I missed that, I have no idea. So we needed to regroup. A quick walk found us at the edge of the Common. A turn at Temple Place got us to Democracy Brewing, and we took a seat.

Walking into the beer hall made me want to break out into “Do You Hear the People Sing?” Luckily for the patrons and bartenders, I refrained. But, seriously, you go step inside and say you don’t feel that same urge.

I’d insert a picture of the hall with long tables stretched out the length of the room with chandeliers hanging above and draped in red and white streamers. But, I forgot to actually snap a photo.

We saddled up to the bar to take a look at their menu. They take their theming to heart. The names on the list read more like a history syllabus than a tap list.

Lucy Stone was an abolitionist and suffragette who was born and died in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to try the beer dedicated to her. The description sounded refreshing. Next time. Next time.

The Fighting 54th on their menu is so named for the African American Massachusetts Infantry division created in 1863. This group of soldiers was the subject of Glory. The beer named after them was a bit hard to drink for me. CJ would have gladly taken it off my hands. When they said tart, they meant it. The more consecutive sips you take, the more the rest of the flavors came through. Although I never did get the peppercorns.

Finish the Fight is a super light beverage brewed to be enjoyed on a sun-soaked porch. If you aren’t into pomegranate though, you’re definitely going to have a struggle finishing this pint. This beverage is all about the pomegranate flavor. It doesn’t overwhelm the palette, just lets you know who’s boss.

Lane 10 is one of their IPAs. I have to apologize here. This is a reference I didn’t get and forgot to ask about. It was light, and as their menu points out not very bitter. The hops they used in this recipe are three I want to love but generally feel like they usually underperform. Good, just not quite what I was looking for that day.

The last beer I tried was the Consummate Rioter, which is also an IPA. The nose did give the citrusy, tropical notes described on the menu. The corresponding flavor did carry over but not in the current juice bomb trend. The bitterness from the hops stood out the most on this beverage. Rioter’s balance of the citrus and bitter was a surprise to taste and was my favorite of the flight.

The Special Memories barley wine had caught my eye. I had every intention of purchasing a pour. Their food menu distracted me, and when it came time to order a full pour, I went with Consummate Rioter forgetting there were other options open to me. Sigh. Next time.

Their food menu is a collection of comfort food options. Deciding on whether or not we were going to do an appetizer style lunch or go for entrees took a long time. Ultimately, the entree side of the menu won. They had my Achilles heel. Mac and cheese. Call me infantile all you want. I just can’t say no.

I’d show you a pic, but again I failed to take the obligatory food snap. I’ll say it again – next time.

I had Adam take my fork away from me at the halfway point of the dish. Not because it wasn’t delicious. But because I didn’t want to be rolled back to the T. Left to my own devices, I would have eaten every last bite.

Adam got their Beerger. Both a mouthful to say and to chew on. I stole a bite and was a little jealous I didn’t order one myself. Cooked exactly as asked. Everything came together for a scrumptious lunch.

Nom. Nom. Nom.

The verdict on this one- I’ll need to investigate more. Not because I didn’t love it. I did. I want to try the rest of the delicious options on their food menu, nachos and street corn I’m looking at you. And I’m interested in their other beer selections. That lovely smell if wort was wafting out the open doors, so I’m sure there’s plenty on deck.
