About Nerd Girl

You’re sitting there asking yourself one question. Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya?

I hope so since you are staring at the page dedicated to telling you more about Nerd Girls Are Cool.

First, let me introduce myself. I am Nicole Simeone, your Nerd Girl host. Welcome! If you follow me below, you will find exactly what you are looking for.

What does Nerd Girl Mean?

The expression nerd girl has a variety of meanings and connotations. It can be used as a cone of shame or pinned as a badge of badassery. Before we go any further, let’s get more specific on which of those meanings and connotations is being used here.

Here, as you might have already guessed, the term is closer to a bad ass badge than anything else. Why not just commit to just that?

Well, that’s easy. In my experience, being labeled a nerd didn’t start by feeling amazing. That feeling took a while to get to.

My goal with Nerd Girls Are Cool is to celebrate and explore nerdy interests.

In the pursuit of that goal, I will be sharing my own anorak leaning past times. Here you will find them all – from DIY escapades and love of books to my ridiculous confections and travels (and probably more than that).

I didn’t realize how great a thing it was to be a nerd girl when I was younger. But I do now. It wasn’t a quick realization nor was it easy. Because of that, I want to share my experiences with all of you to add to the rich lifestyle that is Nerd Girl.

A little more about me

I am a nerd girl. At this point in the page, you probably have figured that out, but I wanted to be perfectly clear.

I am a life long New Englander who grew up right by the ocean. I have spent countless hours in libraries walking the stacks admiring the books. Despite of and thanks to modern technology, my clocked hours will still continue to increase since a physical library is just around the corner, I have a library app downloaded on my phone and frequently volunteer at library events. In my house, there is an entire closet dedicated to blankets and board games. There might also be a picture wall just as you come in the front door that is a not so subtle nod to my and my husband’s nerdiness.

Ever try to describe a person or a place you know really well but then end up choking or going completely blank? That last paragraph does seem a bit vague. I have a hard time coming up with a fantastic summary of myself. I’ve been told I undersell my qualities. Everyone reading this is nodding their heads in agreement. I promise there is a lot more to me than that. Let’s just say that paragraph was a teaser for the actual production. Well, OK. That is what that is.

I have a BA in Writing but I have not employed these skills to a blog before. Honestly, it still kind of scares me that I have committed to this kind of project. But, I spent a good majority of my life not celebrating my nerd girl self. And if that has been my experience, I cannot possibly be the only only one. That said, I can’t back out at this point. Things are easier when there is a community behind you cheering you on.

So my friends, here’s to nerd girls everywhere! May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.

And who doesn't need a little help from friends?

Steps up to microphone.

“Excuse me while I whip this out.”

Proceeds to slosh around in faded pink Kate Spade purse, fighting against a torrent of old Target receipts, dirty quarters, and Sugar in the Raw packets pilfered from Coffee Bean.

“Ahh yes here we go,” Glances at crumbled pages, “Allow me to introduce myself, Agent Kensington take off that neglige- Oh, fuck this is my Austin Powers fanfiction I wrote at Coffee Bean. I suppose I’ll have to wing this then.”

Howdy folks, I’m Catie, aka CJ, I served eight years in Pennsylvania, followed by 25 years in Massachusetts. I am a recent transplant to Los Angeles. Turn-ons include boyfriend’s fabulous mane, craft sour beer, Banjo Kazooie, and cooking for loved ones. Turn-offs are Los Angeles drivers, Malbec wine, the Patriarchy, and Chanel #5 perfume.

My love friend Nerd Girl, who I hope has not replaced me since my cross country move, is kind enough to allow me to guest write on her blog about a topic I know a decent amount about – craft beer. I came to the craft beer scene about 10 years ago, with an initial visit to Redhook in Portsmouth, NH. They offered complimentary samples and a guided trek about the brewery courtesy of the alcoholic tour-guide who refilled his Diet Coke bottle at the beer taps before each walking tour.

In the preceding decade, I have engaged on a journey of self-discovery (oh goodness I really am an Angelino now Nerd Girl) regarding beer and craft brewing. No humblebrag needed, but I have brewed 100+ gallons of beer, cider, and wine in a variety of styles. I will start with this: ANYONE CAN ENJOY BEER! All it takes is a person with a functioning tongue who is totally willing to get silly with how they move beer in their mouth.

I used to read the backs of wine bottles and think WTF this merlot does not taste of raspberries, blackberries, and elderberries (only your mother smells of that). Monty Python fan unite! Amirite?

For realsies though, slosh the glorious liquid on your tongue like an extra auditioning for Frasier (my favorite NBC show to date next to ER; I love you, Dr. Carter). You will experience a veritable rainbow of pretentious flavor notes with which to wow your friends.

And now…onto the beer!
